Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend is probably the most popular song to be ever sung on this niche. The song first featured in 1949 in the Broadway musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The musical had Carol Channing played the lead. A few years later, in 1953, the Broadway musical was made into a movie starring the then reigning celluloid actress Marilyn Monroe. The song sung by the blonde beauty went on to become an epic.
The same song featured once again in the 2011 film Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman. The actress sang it in her own inimitable style.
The popularity of the song never did die down. Over the years many singers have sung it; including Kylie Minogue, Beyonce and Anna Nicole Smith. It remains one of most recognized songs from the last century.
Diamonds and Rust
Joan Baez released a beautiful song called Diamonds – and – Rust in 1975. It went on to touch the Top 40 Hits. The song, eloquently written and sung by Joan was inspired by the relationship she once shared with singer Bob Dylan. The 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds – Are – Forever with Sean Connery playing the lead had a title song by the same name. The song became was as popular as the movie. Diamonds – are – forever was sung by Shirley Bassey.
Interestingly, the tag line adopted in the film and the song was lifted from the promotional advertisements made by De Beers the world’s largest diamond mining company that went “A Diamond is Forever.” Ian Fleming the author of the James Bond novel used the same tag line as the title of the book he published in 1956.

There are many other songs that revolve around diamonds and have become popular. Lucy – In – The – Sky – With – Diamonds, by The Beatles is one of them. Though it was surrounded with some controversy the song did not lose its fan following. It is rumored that the song written by John Lennon has a hidden inference to the drug LSD.
Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond was written in honor of Syd Barrett who was an original member of the famed group. He was the lead guitarist but was dropped from the group because of drug abuse and related conditions.
